I know this might not be the correct forum, but because there is no serach engine optimization forum, I'll post my question here.

How important are the <H1>, <H2>, etc. tags for search engine optimization? Do they still play big role in SEO?

John,

I always put my page titles in <h1> tags, and sub-titles in <h2> or <h3> tags. It doesn't hurt to do that even if the modern search engines don't use the <H> tags in their searching algorithms.

My understanding has always been to use the header tags to support normal structure. If you look at your page and you have a main header that gives an overview of the page that is H1. If you have sub-categories or topics broken down then use H2. If you have sub-points under the H2 headings make those H3.

Do not just place them for SEO purposes. Use them to help support an actual structure to your document.

I have read that the H tags are not really that important any more. At least for most of the search engines. I am not even sure how I would add them to my sites. Most of my sites use pre-existing scripts which I modify, so without a lot of re-working, it might be difficult.

I also agree that not many people use them. As I for one don't, but maybe some people still do. Hmm..

I still think that H1, H2, H3 etc. html tags are very important for search engine optimization. Maybe not all search engines give them a lot of weight, but these tags are hardly obsolete.

Well I guess that they may be. Smile I think that I will try them again and see. Because they may have updated the search engine I tried. Smile

I knew the meta tags don't really play that big of a roll anymore, but I thought that <H1>, etc, tags are important still.
