ASP.NET Hosting

Ive been reading this article:

I was just wondering as i am still learning many things, but can anyone give me an example of who uses this type of hosting.

For example what situations warrent using this type of hosting?

ASP.NET is a web development technology and it's up to you if you want to use it or not. Web developers familiar with Microsoft technologies use ASP.NET, while other developers more familiar with Linux/UNIX usually use PHP, CGI and Perl for web development.

I use ASP.NET hosting because my website backend is MS Access database and you can have Access db only with Windows hosting. My old site was developed with classic ASP, biut I decided to move it to ASP.NET, because I needed some ASP.NET experience for my resume.

If you are working with ASP.NET, you need a Windows based host.
They are currently working on an emulator for Linux servers, but even this will not replace the functionality of Windows servers.

My preferred server is Windows 2000 Professional, though most hosts now use 2003 Server.

What if I do not use anything right now but am learning? Can I run normal web pages on either type of service?

if you are learning then you still need a windows host.
You cant learn unless the server is running .Net

You can get a free ASP.NET hosting if you are still learning. The free hosting services are not very reliable, but if it's just for learning you'll be fine.

There was a free host that offered a trial for education purposes.. I just cant remember which host it was.
I know they had some restrictions, one being that the account expires in 3 months I think it was. Good for learning purposes though.
