I generally develop my apps locally and use IIS to test them.
I still cant figure out if I should actually test them on a real server, or if testing locally on IIS is ok?

In my opinion you should do both. Testing in real server environment is a must, because the operating systems are little different.

I test everything on my local Windows XP development machine and then just upload to my shared web hosting account.

I don't test on my home computer. I develop there, but all debugging etc is done on my server as I think it's the only real way to find bugs in a real world environment.

Often your local home server using IIS will spring up bugs that won't show on your real server, and vice versa.

I usually don't have any problems when I run ASP or ASP.NET code on the server and the code was tested on my local machine. It's possible to have differences between your machine settings and the server settings and that might cause some problems.

What sorts of differences in settings would cause problems?
I imagine that only things like permissions and security issues might cause a problem, but everything else would be just about the same on the server as your home machine.
