I am trying to get a password input to show a default value. I do not want it to show the actual text, but the hidden text with something like asteriks covering it up.

Is there a way to do this, or can it only default to being empty?

A password input field will always show ******* no matter what you type in there.

I understand that... But what if I want to pre-populate it.. Like the person is coming back to the site and I want the password to be filled in ahead of time but show the asteriks in the box.

I do not want the person to type the password in if I know it is them.

Maybe I am not clear on this. Having a hard time explaining what I want.

I know what you mean.
This has to do with sessions, not the box itself.

That's a very broad topic. In a nutshell, you can either use cookies or sessions (global) to remember passwords and automatically parse them in the textbox.

I suggest you read a little about sessions before trying this, as it's quite a difficult concept to grasp in practice.
